Ducks Hoping Price is Right For Former Calgary Coach Page

The Mighty Ducks’ pursuit of Pierre Page continued Friday with General Manager Jack Ferreira trying to arrange possible compensation with General Manager Al Coates of Calgary.

Page had one season remaining on a three-year contract with the Flames when he quit after two seasons as coach Wednesday.

Ferreira expects Calgary to ask the Ducks for compensation in the form of cash or a draft pick, but he believes it can be resolved.

“It depends what the compensation is,” Ferreira said from the NHL draft site at Pittsburgh. “I’ve been trying to get ahold of Calgary. I’ve got to get it done [today] because I’m going to be out of the country next week.”

Page, who flew Friday from his Calgary home to Pittsburgh to be more accessible to NHL executives, received an endorsement from Duck President Tony Tavares.

Tavares and Page spoke informally one day last season for more than an hour after the Flames had worked out at the Ducks’ practice facility.

“I was impressed with his intelligence, not just his hockey intelligence but his raw intelligence,” Tavares said.
