After a daylong meeting shrouded in secrecy, the panel charged with screening the 32 applications for Los Angeles police chief adjourned without agreement Friday. The 10-member panel had hoped to winnow down the list to six names, which will be given to the Police Commission. The commission will recommend three names to Mayor Richard Riordan, who will then nominate the next police chief for City Council approval.
