Hogarth Breaks Medalist Record

Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth shot a five-under-par 67 at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Tuesday and won medalist honors in the stroke-play portion of the California Amateur Championship.

Hogarth, who shot 71 at Spyglass Hill in Monday’s first round to total 138, broke the two-round tournament medalist record of 139 that was set in 1953 by Ken Venturi and equaled in 1980 by Bobby Clampett and in 1985 by Sam Randolph.

Honors

Right-hander Jon Garland of Kennedy High, chosen 10th in the nation by the Chicago Cubs two weeks ago, has been selected City Section 4-A Division player of the year.

Seniors Joe Borchard of Camarillo High and Brian Felten of Crespi are first-team selections to the Southern Section Division I baseball team, selected by the California Baseball Coaches Assn.

Borchard, an outfielder and pitcher, batted .415 with 11 home runs and 42 runs batted in. Felten was 11-2 with a 1.91 ERA.

Senior Eric Horvat of Hart was a first-team Division II.

Division III--Anthony Fabrizio (Burroughs), Chris Gray (Chaminade), Ryan Hamill (Chaminade), Kevin Howard (Westlake), Wes Hutchison (Burroughs).

Pitcher Jennifer Sharron and infielder Erika Hanson of Thousand Oaks, and infielder Hope Robertshaw of Crescenta Valley and utility player Jodie Cox of Quartz Hill were first-team selections in Division I softball.

Four members of the Royal High boys’ volleyball team, which lost to Esperanza in the Southern Section Division I championship, were named All-Southern Section selections Monday.

Setter John Baxter and middle blocker Ryan Denihan were first teamers. Royal opposite hitter Nick Flanagan was named second team and outside hitter Marc Chaffee was named third team.

Buena middle blocker Matt Prosser was named to the second team, Thousand Oaks opposite hitter John Penfield and Hoover opposite hitter Nick Marbach were named third team.

In Division III, Harvard-Westlake swing hitter/middle blocker Trevor Julian was named first team.

Second-team selections included: Larry Cole and Jon Rosenberg of Campbell Hall, Crespi middle blocker Ryan Hill and Providence setter Bobby Chalermsopone. Third-team selections included: Harvard-Westlake’s Brent Fowler, Providence’s Jose Tano, Flintridge Prep’s Craig Revell and Villanova Prep’s Justin Yabrot.

Basketball

Jim Couch, who led the Bell-Jeff girls’ basketball team to the Southern Section Division IV-A title in March, has accepted the women’s basketball coaching position at Pierce College.

Couch inherits a Pierce program that was 1-28 last season.

Boxing

The monthly boxing program at the Reseda Country Club scheduled for Thursday has been postponed until June 26.
