Crew Severs Gas Line, Forcing Road Closure

A construction crew working in Newbury Park accidentally cracked open a gas line Tuesday afternoon, forcing the closure of Wendy Drive for about four hours, Gas Co. officials said.

Employees of Sharma General Engineering were working near the intersection of Wendy Drive and the Ventura Freeway when they hit the 4-inch gas line at about 12:30 p.m., a spokeswoman for the Southern California Gas Co. said. Gas leaked for about four hours while crews repaired the line, she said.

Ventura County sheriff’s deputies closed the street in the vicinity of the leak. The line was repaired and the road reopened to traffic at 4:45 p.m., sheriff’s deputies said.
