Bank Gives $14,000 for 6 Scholarships

City National Bank awarded $14,000 in college scholarships to six minority high school students through the Minority Business Group, an affiliate of the Ventura County Community Foundation. The winners:

Douglas Arnsdorf, Fillmore High School ($2,000); Darlene Calderon, Rio Mesa High School ($2,000); Tammy Hsu, Newbury Park High School ($2,000); Richard Park, Adolfo Camarillo High School ($3,000); Anissa Sepulveda, St. Bonaventure High School ($3,000); Saundria Zomalt, Channel Islands High School ($2,000).

The MBG scholarships are available to graduating high school students who are members of minority groups and intend to pursue an undergraduate business education.

Longs Awards $500 Each to 3 Schools

* Three Conejo Valley Unified Elementary Schools each received a $500 award from Longs drugstores’ Little Red Schoolhouse Grants program. The grants are to be used to pursue special school projects. The winners and awarded programs:

* Aspen Elementary; Family Arts Night, a visual arts activity.

* Conejo Elementary; S.T.A.R. Program, teaching students 12 values.

* Manzanita Elementary; Red Ribbon Week Activities, promoting drug-free living.

All 18 of the district’s elementary schools were eligible to apply for the grants.

Poet Chevalier Takes 1st in County Contest

* Ojai poet and fiction writer Jari Chevalier was awarded first place in the third annual Writers Show Case competition of the Ventura County Writers Club. Chevalier won the award with “Anywhere But Here,” an excerpt from a novel-in-progress. The theme of the competition was “The Wrong Place.” The honor includes a fellowship to attend the 25th annual Santa Barbara Writers Conference.

Area Air Guard Unit Earns National Trophy

* The 146th Airlift Wing of the California Air National Guard has been awarded the Carl Spaatz Trophy by the National Guard Assn. of the United States. The trophy--named after Gen. Carl Spaatz, the first chief of staff of the Air Force--is awarded annually to the best unit in the nation. Criteria for the award include exercises and deployments, inspections, community involvement, safety and overall excellence. The Channel Islands-based Air Guard unit has won the Spaatz Trophy twice before in its 50-year history.
