Asylum Offered to Khmer Rouge Chief

Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge leader whose brutal policies led to the deaths of up to 2 million Cambodians, has been offered asylum by another country, a top government official said. The announcement came amid reports that the guerrilla leader has already fled Cambodia. Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the first prime minister, would not name the “friendly country” that had agreed to accept Pol Pot and his two top lieutenants but said the offer was made to help end Cambodia’s years of armed conflict.
