Property Owners Vote to Keep Parks Levy

San Dimas and La Verne property owners in a mail-in election have overwhelmingly approved the continuation of annual assessments for the upkeep of Bonita Unified School District’s recreation facilities.
When all the ballots were counted Tuesday on whether to continue to raise $798,000 annually through a recreation assessment district, 64% of landowners favored the measure.
The election is a result of Proposition 218, approved last year, which gives property owners power to approve local levies for public services. The district first implemented the assessment six years ago, when such levies only required City Council or school board approval.
The assessment helps maintain playing fields, basketball courts and other recreation facilities used by the public.
The assessment costs the average single-family homeowner $27 a year.
Officials sent 18,425 ballots to property owners and 5,184 were returned. School board member Ed Jones said the 28% return rate was higher than the recent turnout in the regular city elections.
