Chick Honors School’s 2 City Champions

Athletes from El Camino Real High School’s city championship teams in baseball and softball were honored Friday by Laura Chick and her City Council colleagues.

The boys’ baseball team defeated Banning High, 13-11, on May 28 at Dodger Stadium to capture the City Section 4-A Division title. The girls’ softball team won the City Section 4-A Division softball championship with a 2-1 victory over Kennedy High on May 27 at UCLA.

Introducing the girls team, Chick noted that the players participated not only in softball but in other extracurricular activities while maintaining a team GPA of 3.4.

“It’s a real treat to put the spotlight on our female athletes,” Chick said. “It highlights the fact that we have so many young females to serve as role models.”

Chick congratulated the baseball team for its third city title in five years. The councilwoman also recognized El Camino Real baseball Coach Mike Maio for an outstanding season.

The team’s success, she said, was partly “because of his old-fashioned coaching style. He teaches values about teamwork and competition, the basics.”

“Anything good that I do comes from the people surrounding me right now,” Maio said, as the boys stood around him. “I’m very lucky to be at El Camino Real High School.”
