Ice Dogs’ Draper Holds Detroit Powerless in 3-0 Win to Even Series

Associated Press

The summer is getting hotter in Long Beach, but nothing compared to the Ice Dogs’ goaltending.

Goalie Tom Draper gave a record-setting performance and Chris Jensen scored two goals to help Long Beach even the International Hockey League Turner Cup finals with a 3-0 victory over the Detroit Vipers in Game 2 Sunday.

Draper’s 39 saves were the most in a finals’ shutout in the IHL’s 51-year history. He held the Vipers scoreless despite facing 10 power plays.

The series, tied 1-1, resumes June 9 in Long Beach, where the Ice Dogs have won their last 17 games and 36 of 37.

Jensen scored a short-handed goal at 17 minutes 11 seconds of the first period, seconds after Detroit’s Dan Kesa had hit the goal post.

Detroit outshot the Ice Dogs, 16-7, in the second period, but Long Beach led, 2-0.

Jensen scored the game’s final goal into an empty net.
