Pitcher Jon Garland of Kennedy High and second baseman Ismael Rangsiyawong of North Hollywood have been selected players of the year in the North Valley and East Valley leagues.

Garland, among the nation’s top high school pitchers, was 9-3 with 111 strikeouts and a 1.21 earned-run average in 80 2/3 innings.

Rangsiyawong, a junior, had 13 home runs and 48 runs batted in during the regular season.

Antelope Valley High pitcher Jeremy Holiday has been selected most valuable player in the Golden League.

Holiday, a four-year starter, was 10-5 with an 2.61 earned run average.

Larry Najera and Sam Park of Van Nuys High, Elmer Flamenco of Monroe and Joshua Miller of Grant were named to the City Section 3-A Division boys’ volleyball team.

Eagle Rock outside hitter Andy Rivera, a Cal State Northridge recruit, was named 3-A player of the year.

Hoover High opposite hitter Nick Marbach and Arcadia setter Todd Tarplee have been named boys’ volleyball co-players of the year in the Pacific League.

Full crew: The Ventura College women’s soccer team, which captured the Western State Conference title last season, appears well-stocked for 1997.

Among 13 returners, six are all-conference players, including player of the year Joy Barry.

Ventura also has non-binding commitments from high school seniors Cori Russell and Lynn Ray (Buena), Ashley Sawyer (Newbury Park), Fiona MacDonald (Nordhoff), Ellie Pillsbury (Westlake) and Nicole Straky (Thousand Oaks).

The Pirates’ top recruit, Barbara Almaraz of Buena, committed Thursday, Coach Steve Hoffman said. The center midfielder was a Times’ all-region player in 1996 and ’97.
