La Habra Track Coach Retiring After 30 Years

Ralph Winkleman, who has coached cross-country and track and field for 30 years at La Habra High has retired, Athletic Director Frank McCarroll said Thursday.

He will be replaced in both jobs by Ray Lopez, who has been coaching lower-level basketball at the school for the past three years.

Pepperdine’s Steve Schenewerk was recently named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team. Schenewerk, a right-hander from Fountain Valley High, was 8-3 with a 4.61 earned-run average in 84 innings for the Waves. He had two shutouts and six complete games.

He was 15-2 as a senior at Fountain Valley, with a 1.48 ERA and 92 strikeouts. The Barons (24-7) reached the Southern Section Division I championship game.

Erica Pilkington, a softball pitcher from Santiago High, has signed to attend Concordia, her father, Jack, said Thursday. She had 83 strikeouts this season.

The Concordia men’s basketball team announced the signing of Joey Busch, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound center from Upland High School. Busch, the Baseline League most valuable player, averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds for Upland last season.

A five-kilometer run will be held in downtown Anaheim beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The run, which includes a 1K kids’ run, benefits the Anaheim Museum and the American Lung Assn. of Orange County. The race starts at the Center Street Promenade and Anaheim Boulevard.

Martin Jirak, Gian-Carl Zeoli and David Matthew have signed to play tennis at UC Irvine, school officials announced.

Jirak attended the Prague Tennis Gymnasium and is ranked seventh in the Czech Republic. He attends Carmel High.

Zeoli attended West Toronto School of Excellence and is ranked among the top 10 in Canada.

Matthew is from Lambrik High School in Victoria, British Columbia, and is also ranked among the top 10 in Canada. He is a member of the Canadian Youth World Team.

Joe Koh, baseball coach at Corona del Mar High, has resigned his walk-on position to spend more time with his family.

Koh’s teams compiled a record of 34-35-2 in his three seasons as coach. The Sea Kings finished 9-14-1 this year.

At Pacifica High, boys’ Athletic Director Chris Hurst said Mike Willey, walk-on baseball coach the past two years, has resigned.

Willey, a teacher at Savanna High, guided the Mariners (14-13) into the playoffs this season. They lost in the first round of Division III play to Laguna Hills, 8-2. Last year, Pacifica finished 15-10-1.

At Laguna Beach High, Athletic Director Greg Marshall said Michael Matje, girls’ soccer coach, has resigned to pursue professional options.

Charles Reid, from Whittier College and Villa Park High, finished eighth in the 400 meters (48.93 seconds) and earned All-American honors Saturday at the NCAA Division III track and field championships at Wisconsin La Crosse.

Chapman women’s tennis players Deborah Denio and Jocelyn Leyretana were named to the GTE District VIII Academic All-Americans. Denio is a movement/exercise science major with a 3.52 grade-point average. Leyretana is a business/political science major with a 3.65 GPA.

Ocean View pitcher Sara Gulla has made an oral commitment to attend Marshall University, according to her mother, Karon.

Gulla (17-8) helped Ocean View to its second consecutive Golden West League title.
