JetHawks Cry Foul After Loss

LANCASTER — It was a classic duel between two hot hitters that, in the end, came down to a foul ball.
JetHawks right fielder Miguel Correa dropped a foul in the sixth inning that allowed Visalia’s David Newhan to stay alive at the plate. Two pitches later, Newhan stroked a ground-rule double to drive in the game-winning run as Visalia won, 8-7, before 2,809 at the Hangar on Tuesday.
Newhan also hit two home runs, driving in five runs. For his part, Correa went three for five with a home run.
But after the game, it was the dropped foul that JetHawk Manager Rick Burleson recalled.
“If we catch [Newhan’s] foul ball down the right-field line, we’re still playing,” Burleson said. “The wind plays havoc on the outfielders.”
Coming into the game, JetHawk ace Rob Luce (7-1) was looking to become the first eight-game winner in the California League.
Visalia (24-27) opened an early lead on Newhan’s homers, both two-run shots to dead center, in the first and fourth innings.
“It was one of those days,” Luce said. “I just didn’t have my stuff.”
