El Camino Real Wins With Help

El Camino Real scored two unearned runs, including one in the bottom of the ninth inning, to defeat Granada Hills Kennedy, 2-1, in the City Section Division 4-A softball finals Tuesday at UCLA.

Jessica Riddle, who had two hits and two runs batted in, provided the winning run when Louann Avila mishandled her bunt for the fifth error for the Golden Cougars (21-5).

With one out, Vanessa Laguirre singled through shortstop and reached second on a passed ball. Riddle then bunted a 3-and-1 pitch from Sandra Durazo toward third baseman Avila, who overthrew Cynthia Barraza at first.

Laguirre scored from second and the Conquistadors (19-3) won their second consecutive title.

South Gate 3, Westchester 1--Despite poor fielding and even worse baserunning, the Rams (18-2) managed to win their first Division 3-A title in four appearances at UCLA.

Pitcher Candice Esquivel (17-1) threw a two-hitter and proved to be the Rams’ best fielder. She made three putouts and assisted on six others.
