New Leader Blames U.S. for Tensions

In his first news conference, Mohammad Khatami, Iran’s president-elect, blamed Washington for strained relations with his nation and said there will be no improvement unless the United States changes its policy toward his country. Iran and the U.S. have been at odds since the 1979 Islamic revolution, when the U.S. Embassy in Tehran was occupied and its American occupants were held hostage. Khatami’s victory had been seen as a sign that Iranians want a milder form of Islamic rule.
