Port Officials to Appeal Ruling on Cargo Terminal
- Share via
Port of Long Beach officials who were barred by a judge from building a cargo terminal on the site of the closed Naval Station voted Tuesday to appeal the decision rather than allow an independent consultant to study other possible uses for the land.
The port had planned to raze the aging Navy base and erect a 145-acre terminal in its place, but a local preservationist organization sued to save historic buildings on the site. A Los Angeles judge last week blocked the project, ruling that the city’s Harbor Commission was predisposed to approve the project before it fully evaluated the impact on the environment.
In his ruling, the judge cited a letter of intent and a lease on the property signed by the port’s executive director.
