Winners of the PEN Center USA West 1997 Literary Awards Competition were announced Tuesday, honoring outstanding works published or produced in 1996 by writers living in the West.
This year’s winners are:
Fiction: William T. Vollmann, “The Atlas” (Viking)
Creative nonfiction: Jonathan Raban, “Bad Land” (Pantheon)
Research nonfiction: Edward Humes, “No Matter How Loud I Shout” (Simon & Schuster)
Poetry: Bob Kaufman, “Cranial Guitar” (Coffee House Press)
Translation: Maryellen Toman Mori, “Kangaroo Notebook” (Knopf)
Children’s literature: Peg Kehret, “Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio” (Whitman)
Journalism: J.R. Moehringer, “The Accident” (Los Angeles Times Magazine)
Drama: Rita Nachtmann, “How I Spent My Life’s Vacation” (Camilla’s Theatre)
Teleplay: Bima Stagg, “Inside” (Showtime)
Screenplay: Cameron Crowe, “Jerry Maguire” (TriStar)
