Tigers’ Problems Resurface in Loss

Ken Hill won in his first start since April 30 and the Texas Rangers took advantage of poor Detroit pitching and defense to beat the Tigers, 8-4, Saturday at Detroit.

Billy Ripken hit a home run and Warren Newson hit a three-run double for the Rangers, who have won 10 of their last 15 games.

Detroit, second in the majors in fielding average, made three errors that led to three unearned runs.

Hill (2-3) was activated Saturday after three weeks on the disabled list because of a strained right shoulder. He gave up three runs and four hits in six innings.

Tim Pugh (1-1), making his second start for the Tigers, gave up four runs and three hits in only one inning, walking three. He had retired 24 of 29 batters in an eight-inning stint while beating Kansas City on May 17.

Texas took advantage of three hits and three walks to score four times in the first.

Ripken’s homer was his second of the season.
