SAN BERNARDINO — Three people were killed early Saturday in a fiery head-on collision involving a wrong-way driver, authorities said.
Two pickup trucks were involved in the collision on the eastbound side of California 30, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The driver of a Nissan pickup was apparently traveling west on the eastbound side of the highway, Officer David Chavez said.
The errant vehicle, driven by a man in his 40s, hit a Ford Ranger pickup head-on, Chavez said. The Nissan burst into flames and a passerby tried to tow the Ranger away from it.
“A citizen was able to stop,” Chavez said. “He hooked on to the Ranger pickup from the back and pulled it away from the burning vehicle, but it was too late.”
The two men in the Ford were crushed. They appeared to have been headed on a fishing trip.
The driver of the Ford was about 40 years old and the passenger was about 22.
Officers believed that the driver of the Nissan was from San Bernardino, and the occupants of the Ranger appeared to be from the Riverside area.
Chavez said it was not known whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident. Identities were not released.
