Pacifica Wins Perfect Game on Walk

Though Amanda Freed pitched a perfect game, top-seeded Pacifica needed a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Valencia, 1-0, in the first round of the Southern Section Division III softball playoffs.
Pacifica (26-1-1), ranked No. 1 in the state, learned a valuable lesson Friday.
“You can’t take anything for granted,” Coach Rob Weil said. “That’s what I stressed to the kids over the last four or five days, especially when you’re ranked the way we are. Teams have nothing to lose when they play us. [Losing pitcher Allison] Jacobs rose to the occasion.”
Freed struck out 15; it was her fourth perfect game and seventh no-hitter.
Jacobs (6-5), after walking Toni Mascarenas intentionally, walked Freed on four pitches with the bases loaded, forcing in Diana Barreras.
Toria Auelua had two of Pacifica’s five hits.
Valencia is 13-15. Pacifica plays Laguna Hills in Tuesday’s second-round games.
