Swan Double in 14th Sinks UCLA

Katie Swan’s opposite-field double in the 14th inning Friday night gave top-seeded Arizona a 2-0 victory over UCLA at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Swan’s hit down the left-field line came after Chrissy Gill had reached on an infield hit and Alison Johnsen walked.

UCLA loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on an error, a single and a walk before Nancy Evans got Julie Marshall to ground out to end the game.

Evans (34-1) went the distance for her 16th consecutive victory, giving up five hits and striking out eight.

“As the game went on, neither team was willing to give in, and I think that’s why it lasted as long as it did,” said Bruin Coach Sue Enquist. “It’s just unfortunate that were were on the short end of it.”

Arizona (59-4) is off until Sunday. UCLA (46-13) will play tonight against either Michigan or South Carolina, who meet earlier in the day in an elimination game.

Christa Williams pitched the whole game for UCLA, giving up nine hits and striking out 10.

“You’ve got to hand it to her [Swan],” Williams said. “She went with the pitch and there are a lot of times when you don’t expect the batter to go with the pitch. She made the adjustment and got two runs and won the game.”

Iowa and Washington played in a winner’s bracket game late Friday.
