Fernando Valenzuela won for the first time in seven starts and Wally Joyner had three hits, including a two-run homer, as the San Diego Padres beat the Florida Marlins, 6-3, Friday night.

It was the fifth consecutive win for the Padres and the second loss in a row for the Marlins, who had won eight in a row.

The Padres scored three runs in the eighth inning on a double by Tony Gwynn, a single by Treay Beamon that gave the rookie his first three-hit game and a grounder by Terry Shumpert.

Valenzuela’s only previous victory this season came April 16 at Pittsburgh, and he was 0-5 with a 6.35 earned run average in his previous six starts.

But the left-hander was strong for 5 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up only five hits and retiring the side in the third with runners on first and second. He struck out four and walked two.
