A 15-year-old boy walking his brother and a friend home was shot Tuesday afternoon in front of a middle school during an apparent gang-related exchange, police said.

The boy, Cong V. Tran, was shot in the head and was in critical condition at a Sacramento hospital, said Vince Matranga, police chief for the Sacramento City Unified School District.

The shooting occurred as Will C. Wood Middle School in southeast Sacramento had just let out for the day about 2:30 p.m.

“There were hundreds of kids everywhere. It was chaos. We were very lucky to have only one person shot,” said Sacramento police spokeswoman Pam Alejandre.

Matranga, however, said one of the younger boys was grazed in the arm.

Police captured one teenage youth and were searching fields around the school for a second youth, Alejandre said.
