Valley area golf teams had a tough time on a tough course Monday in the Southern Section Championships at Saticoy Country Club, with none of the four local teams finishing higher than eighth out of 24.
Heavy favorite Santa Barbara San Marcos won with a score of 375 on a course that yielded only eight scores under 400. Anaheim Servite (382), Santa Margarita (385) and Irvine University (389) also qualified for the CIF/SCGA championships June 2.
Westlake was eighth in the 24-team field with a team score of 399. Hart (401) finished ninth, Flintridge Prep (405) was tied for 13th and Calabasas (417) came in 18th.
The average score in Monday’s tournament was 406, up 17 strokes from last week’s regional scores. Up until two years ago, no high school team had broken 400 at Saticoy. San Marcos was the first to do it in a Channel League match against Rio Mesa.
Ryan Wyman, a Hart sophomore, tied for the day’s best round with a 71. He missed only two greens. Westlake’s J.T. Kohut and Jason Park each shot 74. Andy Brisbois of Flintridge Prep paced the Rebels with a 76 while Calabasas was led by freshman Justin Ohye, who shot 79.
