NEW YORK — American Express Co. said Monday that 21-year-old golf sensation Tiger Woods will be a worldwide spokesman for the financial services company.
Terms for the multi-year agreement were not disclosed, but reports are putting the fee as high as $30 million for five years to feature Woods in advertisements for various American Express products, including its financial services and its credit cards.
As part of the deal, which has been in the works since December, American Express said it contributed $1 million to the Tiger Woods Foundation, which aims to introduce golf to inner city youngsters.
Woods joins the ranks of cellist Yo Yo Ma, the late puppeteer Jim Henson, the late politician Barbara Jordan, actor Karl Malden and comedian Jerry Seinfeld, all whom have starred in American Express advertising campaigns.
Woods’ first assignment will be as spokesman for American Experss Financial Advisors, with advertising using the “Do More” slogan to begin in the third quarter of this year.
