New Yorkers Still Want Dodgers

Undeterred by a brushoff from Dodger owner Peter O’Malley, two Brooklyn congressmen Monday unveiled legislation aimed at making it easier to return the team, which is up for sale, to its original home.

Apparently determined to continue tilting at this particular windmill, Democratic Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Charles Schumer said their bill would invalidate a major league baseball rule under which local owners can veto a move by another team into their city.

Such a change would allow a local group to make an offer for the Dodgers without fear of a veto by New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner or New York Met owner Fred Wilpon.

O’Malley, who is negotiating with media mogul Rupert Murdoch, last month rejected a request for a meeting with representatives of a state commission seeking to bring the Dodgers back to Brooklyn.

Cincinnati Red Manager Ray Knight could learn today what his latest on-field eruption will cost him.

NL president Len Coleman has received a report from umpire Jerry Layne, who contended that Knight bumped him and spit on him during an argument that led to his ejection Saturday.

Knight also uprooted third base and threw it down before leaving the field. It was his second ejection in 17 days.
