7 Killed as Van Flips, Rolls Over Near Coalinga

Seven people were killed in a solo van accident Monday in rural Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred at 8:15 p.m. on Interstate 5 about 25 miles north of Coalinga. The five surviving passengers were flown by helicopter to Valley Medical Center in Fresno. Their conditions were not immediately known.

CHP Officer Dan Tackitt said it was not known what caused the van to flip and roll over several times.

It was the second major accident of the day in Fresno County. A few hours earlier, a dust storm caused a 30-vehicle pileup on California 99 near the town of Fowler, injuring numerous people.
