$3 Passenger Fee Sought for Airports
The Los Angeles Department of Airports wants to start collecting a $3 fee on every ticket sold to passengers leaving Los Angeles International Airport and Ontario International Airport.
The Board of Airport Commissioners, on a 4-0 vote, agreed Monday to ask the Federal Aviation Administration to approve the charge, effective Nov. 1 for five years.
The department collected a $3-per-passenger facility charge at both airports from July 1993 to January 1996 to pay for airport improvements and additions. It discontinued the fee when it had collected enough money to build another terminal at the Ontario airport.
The board wants to reinstate the fee to buy land to expand LAX and Ontario, and for programs to soundproof homes around both airports.
