Demolition of Houses for Freeway Begins

Caltrans workers began demolition Monday on the first of 204 homes in the pathway of the Foothill Freeway extension through La Verne and Claremont.
Demolition crews this week will level eight vacant homes acquired by the state near La Verne’s Emerald Park as they prepare for the $1-billion highway stretching from San Dimas to San Bernardino, Caltrans officials said.
Caltrans has purchased 54 homes and plans to acquire 150 structures, mostly in La Verne, in the next two years to make way for the freeway, said Caltrans spokeswoman Margie Tiritilli.
The highway will stretch along the existing California 30 through La Verne, Claremont, Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Rialto and San Bernardino.
Construction is to begin in March 1998 with widening of Foothill Boulevard in La Verne, as well as construction of the Interstate 15/30 interchange in Rancho Cucamonga, Tiritilli said. Transportation officials said the freeway extension is scheduled to be completed by 2005.
