Newport Meets With Koreans on Sister City Status

It already has three sister cities, but Newport Beach is considering adopting yet another one.

Members of the Newport Beach Sister City Assn. are meeting this week with delegates from Yochon City, Korea, to discuss the final stages of adoption.

A 10-member delegation, including Yochon City Mayor Chae-Ho Chun, will make the trip to Newport Beach to visit its potential sister city.

Newport Beach Sister City Assn. spokeswoman Jolyn Wayne-Yamada said Newport Beach’s situation is not unique, and that most cities establish ties with several cities abroad. As to why they selected Yochon City, Wayne-Yamada said they believed many residents would be interested in visiting Korea.

“There seems to be a lot of people who want to establish business relationships with Korea,” she said.

Newport Beach has sister city affiliations with Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; Antibes, France; and Okazaki, Japan.
