Hearing on Teacher Training Plan Tonight
A proposal to postpone by one year a state-funded teacher training program in elementary reading instruction will be the topic of a public hearing tonight by Garden Grove Unified School District officials.
State law mandates that the district seek public comment before applying for a one-year waiver in spending its one-time $90,000 allocation on special teacher training.
District officials, who are considering changes in reading programs for kindergarten through third grade, hope to use their $90,000 to train teachers in the new reading program.
A phonics-based program, Collections for Young Scholars, has been recommended for adoption by an evaluation committee of teachers, school administrators and instructional experts. A vote on the new curriculum is set for June 17.
If the waiver is approved, teachers will be required to receive training before June 30, 1998.
The public hearing will be during the school board’s regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the district’s Education Center, 10331 Stanford Ave.
