Homeless Man Held in Stabbing Case

A homeless man suspected of stabbing a fellow transient in the neck during a fight was in Ventura County Jail on Sunday in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Ventura police arrested Larry Ray Van Diver, 39, of Ventura on suspicion of attempted murder after the Saturday evening altercation.

The victim, Jeffrey Sanderson, 41, also of Ventura, was reported in serious condition Sunday at Ventura County Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery.

According to police, both men were near Westpark Recreation Center, 450 W. Harrison Ave., about 6 p.m. when Van Diver allegedly confronted Sanderson about being disrespectful to a woman.

The argument turned physical and Van Diver allegedly stabbed the other man once in the neck. Sanderson was able to escape and call authorities.

Police arrested Van Diver several hours later and found the knife they believe was used. Van Driver is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday.
