‘Titanic’s’ Budget Is an Iceberg for Studios

Re James Cameron’s Counterpunch on the problematic shoot of his impeding “Titanic” (“ ‘Titanic Is a Tough Shoot; What Else Is New?,” Calendar, May 5):
No one doubts Cameron has a laborious and excruciating task in completing the filming of “Titanic.” Cameron’s work ethic is inspiring.
Nevertheless, I feel Cameron hasn’t fully touched the most important part of his film, and that is its enormous budget. At an astounding estimated $200 million, “Titanic” has dethroned 1995’s “Waterworld” as the highest-costing movie in history.
In an era when major studios dishing out $100 million for a summer bonanza seems almost normal, “Titanic’s” budget symbolizes another frightening escalation. Studios should instead go in the other direction.
