Galaxy update--The team was hoping to have Jorge Campos back today, but his Mexican League club, Atlante, surprised Necaxa, 2-0, in the playoff quarterfinals Wednesday and it will be at least another week before the goalkeeper returns. Also missing today will be midfield playmaker Mauricio Cienfuegos, who will start today for El Salvador in a World Cup ’98 qualifying game against Jamaica at Kingston.
The Galaxy has been shut out in its last three games and its four-game losing streak is the longest in the league this season. The team has scored only six goals in eight games and has been held scoreless in the first half in seven of its eight games. The Galaxy suffered its worst loss of the season April 12, when it was beaten, 4-1, by San Jose. The Galaxy took only nine shots in its 1-0 loss to the Wizards in Kansas City last Saturday and only one of them was on target.
The Galaxy defeated the Clash in seven of eight games last season. Galaxy players Brad Wilson, Guillermo Jara and John Jones played for the A League Orange County Zodiac on Friday night against the Colorado Foxes.
Clash update--San Jose has strengthened its roster in the past week by adding Mexican national team striker Daniel “El Travieso” Guzman and Honduran national team defender Arnold Cruz. The latter was acquired in a trade that sent Nigerian midfielder Ben Iroha to defending MLS champion Washington D.C. United.
The Clash tied Aston Villa of England’s Premier League, 1-1, in San Jose on Tuesday (the Galaxy will play Aston Villa on Wednesday evening at the Rose Bowl), then was beaten, 2-1, in a shootout by the New England Revolution on Friday night. Five of the Clash’s nine games have been decided by a shootout.
Forward Eric Wynalda (groin strain) and defender John Doyle (ankle sprain) are listed as doubtful. Doyle has had an ongoing battle with Galaxy striker Eduardo Hurtado for more than a year. But whether Hurtado’s poor start to the season will end because of Doyle’s likely absence will depend on whether Galaxy Coach Lothar Osiander plays the forward from Ecuador.
