A police officer was hit by a car and seriously injured while running across a street in pursuit of a suspect Saturday.
The unidentified officer and his partner were answering a radio call in the Watts area for a “shots fired” report when they spotted a man who matched the description of the suspect, said Officer Don Cox.
The officers got out of their car and approached the man, who fled, leading the officers in a foot chase, Cox said.
While pursuing the suspect across Compton Avenue, one officer was hit by a car that was traveling south, Cox said.
The officer was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in serious but stable condition.
The suspect, who was not identified, was in custody Saturday night, said Sgt. Arthur Reyna of the Southeast Division.
