Complete power was restored to McNichols Arena on Friday, about 16 hours after an electric substation blew in the basement of the facility, plunging portions of the building into darkness and jeopardizing Thursday night’s NHL playoff game in Denver.
Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals went on as scheduled, although sections of the ice became soft during the second period of the Avalanche’s 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

The Edmonton Oilers, who upset Dallas in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, have rewarded Coach Ron Low with a multiyear contract extension.
The Oilers, exercising an option to renew his contract, gave Low a multiyear term extending beyond the 1998-99 season.
Low, hired as coach April 6, 1995, replacing George Burnett, has a 71-88-18 record in the job.
“I think everyone saw how bright the future of this team is and, needless to say, I want to be a part of that future,” Low said.
