What’s in a Name?
Three years ago, trustees decided to name Oxnard’s newest elementary school, set to open in July, after longtime Supt. Norman Brekke (B1). But sentiment for the new name wasn’t unanimous then and it still isn’t. . . . Trustee Francisco Dominguez, who joined the board two years after the name was approved, wants to revisit the question. The issue? Some say Brekke’s views are not representative of the predominantly Latino district.
Economic Boost
Ventura County’s unemployment rate continues to drop, hitting the lowest level since June 1990 (B1). . . . The 5.5% figure for April signals the county’s continuing economic growth. “Incomes are up, people are spending in stores and buying homes,” said UC Santa Barbara economist Mark Schniepp. “They really do suggest a vibrant local economy.”
Cal Lutheran Survives
Cal Lutheran split a double-header Friday in the NCAA Division III West regional series, meaning the Kingsmen will move on to the fourth game of their best-of-five contest with Chapman University (C12). The Kingsmen, who are down 2-1 in the competition, came back from an 8-1 deficit to stay alive. . . . Cal Lutheran plays at noon today at Moorpark College.
