Five orphans and a Burbank house painter, whose fates were united by a simple act of kindness, faced uncertainty Friday after a deadly hit-and-run collision in Burbank.
The painter and the mother, whose car ran out of gas, where struck while he was helping her fuel the tank. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The children of Sharon McPherson, 43, were with older sister Carrie Brown, 24, in Fairfield, Ohio. She was trying to figure out a score of details--from funeral arrangements, to how to manage with little money in a small apartment.
Agustin Luz, struck as he tried to help McPherson put gas in her car, faces up to a year of recovery from injuries to his pelvis and spine. Luz, 28, has two daughters, ages 4 years and 4 months.
Two men were later arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, police said.
Burbank police said a trust fund has been set up for the children: Rucker/Mullins Memorial Fund, 5th/3rd Bank, 201 East 4th St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202. The account number is 25-932787.
