OAKLAND — George Williams had three hits, including an eighth-inning single that drove in the go-ahead run, as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-5, on Thursday night.
Scott Spiezio started the eighth with a single off Bob Wickman (2-2) and was sacrificed to second. Williams, who began the night one for 18 lifetime against the Brewers, hit a soft liner to center for the decisive run.
Don Wengert (2-2) worked two scoreless innings for the victory and Billy Taylor got three outs for his eighth save.
Patrick Lennon, recalled from triple-A Edmonton earlier in the day to take the place of slumping outfielder Ernie Young, went two for three with three RBIs in helping the Athletics win a second in a row after seven consecutive losses.
Oakland overcame the loss of starter Dave Telgheder, who left the game after two innings because of a bruised left forearm after being hit by Gerald Williams’ line drive.
Milwaukee pulled into a tie, 5-5, in the fifth on Matt Mieske’s third hit of the night, an RBI double.
Oakland moved in front, 5-4, with a three-run second that included a two-run single by Lennon and a bases-loaded walk to Geronimo Berroa. Telgheder issued a one-out walk in the second and was then hit in the left wrist when he threw up his glove hand to try to deflect a line drive back to the mound.
