Valley Must Go Through Carson

A San Fernando Valley team has won 23 of the past 24 City Section 4-A Division baseball titles, but that didn’t deter the seeding committee Thursday night from making Carson High the top-seeded team for the playoffs.

The committee made up of coaches from league champions gave the Colts the nod over Chatsworth, North Hollywood and Kennedy, based on a 24-6-1 overall record and a 15-2 mark in the Southern Pacific Conference.

Carson, coached by Mike Kline, has enjoyed more success than most non-Valley teams in recent postseason play, advancing to the 4-A final in 1995.

Chatsworth, which won the West Valley League title, was seeded second and will face Mid-Valley League champion Reseda in Tuesday’s first round.

Reseda, which defeated Monroe for the title Thursday, was seeded 15th because of a 12-11 overall record and 9-8 conference mark.

Third-seeded North Hollywood (25-6), which won more games than any school in the section, will play host to University in the first round.

Two-time defending champion Kennedy, seeded fourth, plays San Pedro.

Sixth-seeded El Camino Real, with two semifinal appearances and two section titles in the past four years, will play host to Westchester.

Cleveland, which was denied the North Valley League title because of an upset loss to Granada Hills on Thursday, will still play its playoff opener at home. The Cavaliers are seeded seventh and will play host to Sylmar.

Eighth-seeded Poly will play Banning. The Parrots lost to Kennedy in last year’s 4-A final at Dodger Stadium.

All first-round games are tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday at the higher-seeded school.
