Poll: Few Feel Clinton, Gore Broke Law

Associated Press

Most Americans doubt President Clinton or Vice President Al Gore did anything illegal to get campaign contributions, an Associated Press poll found.

With many Americans withholding judgment and the rest split sharply on party lines, only 27% conclude that Clinton personally broke the law to finance his 1996 reelection.

An even smaller 22% believe that Gore crossed the line into illegality in his fund-raising, which included making political solicitations from his government office and attending a fund-raiser at a Buddhist temple in California.

Americans split 39% to 38% on the question of whether anyone in the Clinton-Gore reelection campaign broke the law to raise money. The poll of 1,007 adults was taken May 2-9 by ICR of Media, Pa. The results have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
