8 Drug Traffickers Sentenced to Death

Authorities sentenced eight people to death at the end of a two-week narcotics smuggling trial. Hundreds of people gathered outside the court in downtown Hanoi as verdicts were read in a case involving state security officials. In addition to the death sentences, eight other people were given life prison terms, and six received terms ranging from a suspended sentence to 20 years in jail--all for involvement in a ring that allegedly flooded Vietnam with hundreds of pounds of heroin.
