LANCASTER — Neighbors were evacuated and a sheriff’s deputy suffered minor injuries when a reportedly suicidal man fired at a group of deputies Wednesday and barricaded himself in a residence, authorities said.
The man--who was not identified--remained barricaded late Wednesday night while a Special Weapons and a Hostage Negotiations team tried to persuade him to come out, said Deputy Kim Unland of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The incident began about 4:25 p.m. when authorities received a call reporting an armed and suicidal man at a residence in the 44500 block of Benald Street, authorities said.
When the deputies arrived, the man fired at them with a shotgun, Unland said. One of the deputies was hit by a pellet in the left hand. He was treated at a local hospital and released, Unland said.
She said the officers returned fire but it was not known if they hit the man.
Several neighbors were evacuated but it was not known how many, she said.
