AmeriCorps Seeks Local Volunteers

AmeriCorps, a national service program sponsored by the federal Corp. for National Service, is recruiting women and men 18 and older to assist local nonprofit and national organizations in the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles.

Participants, who serve full-time for one to two years, receive a small living allowance as well as an educational award for college tuition or vocational training.

The Sacramento-based California Commission on Improving Life Through Service is the state sponsor of AmeriCorps.

Two AmeriCorps programs are currently seeking volunteers.

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) needs college graduates and people with skills to assist local organizations in low-income communities.

One thousand 18- to 24-year-old volunteers are needed for AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps), a 10-month, full-time residential program that does community beautification and renovation projects.
