Spell check:

When honorary Hollywood mayor Johnny Grant misspelled his own name (Johny) in the wet cement outside Mann’s Chinese Theatre on Tuesday, it wasn’t the first snafu of that type.

Some years ago, Sylvester Stallone forgot to cross the “t” in his last name (see photo). It was later chiseled in--by a stand-in, we presume.

The Walk of Fame also has seen its share of goofs by the Chamber of Commerce.

Comic Dick Van Dyke’s star on the boulevard was unveiled as VANDYKE--prompting someone to give the entertainer a black grease pencil to do some honorary editing. When actor Roddy McDowall was given a new plaque during a refurbishing, it said MACDOWLL.

The oddest tribute, however, was for Maurice Diller, who didn’t exist. The intended luminary was Mauritz Stiller, the Swedish silent-film director. Stiller was finally given a star in 1988. At the time, we argued to no avail that Maurice Diller should keep his star. Hollywood ought to have a special plaque for nobodies too.

BEACH WATCH: Turning on an all-news radio station, we were thrilled to hear Long Beach City Councilman Jerry Shultz declaring, “The entire world is watching Long Beach, California.” Alas, it turned out that he was referring to the council vote on whether to keep the Queen Mary or have her towed away (she’s staying).

Here we assumed Shultz was referring to the presence of the Southland’s most successful sports team, the Long Beach Ice Dogs, in the hockey playoffs.

NEIGHBORS ALL: One thing no one can dispute is what a tightly knit community Southern California is. Take today’s map of Ontario (see accompanying), which was part of an ad for a new theater there. Why, heading north on bustling Milliken Avenue, you can take a left and be in L.A. in a few minutes. Or you can swing right and, next thing you know, you’re in Barstow. South of the San Bernardino Freeway there’s Orange County. No wonder so many Southern Californians bicycle to work.

IT’S STILL L.A. ADJACENT: When Enova, the parent of San Diego Gas & Electric, merges with Pacific Enterprises, the parent of Southern California Gas Co., the new corporate headquarters will be in San Diego. “So,” writes San Diego columnist Diane Bell, “Richard D. Farman, president of Pacific Enterprises, is house-hunting here. But don’t tell L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan. Farman co-chairs Progress L.A. Inc., a group of business leaders working with Riordan to keep business in L.A.”

Yeah, but let San Diego try to take away the Ice Dogs . . .

“My America . . . Or Honk If You Love Buddha” will kick off the L.A. Asian Pacific Film and Video Festival tonight at the Music Hall Theater on Wilshire Boulevard, west of Ontario.
