Calabasas’ Carlisi Trys Perfect Pitch

Calabasas High has had five effective pitchers this season, but only Frank Carlisi might find his way into the Southern Section record book.

The Coyote closer has not allowed a run this season. Although Carlisi has only pitched 15 2/3 innings, the record book only requires a minimum of six appearances. Carlisi has 12. If he finishes the season without an earned run, Carlisi would join Bob Coleman of South Pasadena (1959) and Bob Westland of Notre Dame (1979) as the only pitchers with perfect seasons.

Perfect pitch: Junior right-hander John Ennis of Monroe, who hurled a perfect game with 12 strikeouts last week against Canoga Park for his second no-hitter of the season, figures to be among the area’s top pitchers next season.

Ennis, in fact, should spearhead an improved staff. Monroe pitchers Victor Banuelos, Jesse Madrid and Adam Kaplan all are juniors.

Fast Bulldogs: Perhaps Channel League softball opponents should post a sign when playing Buena.

It would read: “Beware of Bulldogs on the base paths.”

Buena has swiped 74 bases in 79 attempts this season. In 22 games, that’s an average of 3.4 stolen bases a game.

“We do a lot of hit-and-runs that end up being just stolen bases,” first-year coach and Buena alumna Amy Thomas said. “But we have a lot of speed.”

Five players have 10 or more stolen bases: Kimi Stetler has 12; April Miller, Sylvia Naungayan and Robyn Peet have 11, and Shannon Prentice has stolen 10.
