Morris To Take Over at Ventura

Terry Morris, the defensive coordinator on the Ventura College football team last season, was expected to be hired as the school’s coach late Tuesday night.

The hiring of Morris was expected to be approved by the Ventura County Community College District board of trustees.

Morris, a former assistant at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn., will replace George Rosales, who resigned after last season. Rosales was 8-30 in four seasons with the Pirates.

Last season, the Pirates finished 4-6 overall, 1-4 in Western State Conference Northern Division play.

Canyons vote: The Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees is expected to vote tonight on whether to resurrect football at College of the Canyons. The college discontinued the sport after the 1981 season.

At a board meeting on April 16, a feasibility committee recommended that football be reinstated, but the board expressed concern over financing the program.

One Dumais out: One Dumais brother will be missing at the Southern Section Division I diving finals this afternoon at Heritage Park in Irvine, but Buena High should still dominate the results.

Senior Justin Dumais, who has won the past two Division I titles, leaves later Wednesday to dive with the U.S. national team in Juarez, Mexico. Because the finals don’t begin until 3:30 p.m., Dumais won’t have enough time to dive, then make his flight.

Buena officials checked into the possibility of Dumais diving early in the day, but judges couldn’t arrive until the afternoon.

Junior Troy Dumais, who was runner-up to Justin the past two years, missed the Channel League finals to dive in a Grand Prix meet in Florida, but will compete for the Bulldogs in Irvine.

Troy and sophomore Brice Dumais, who finished third last year, are now the prohibitive favorites.

Kogan seventh: Dona Lee Kogan of Northridge is in seventh place in the 18th California Senior Women’s Amateur Golf Championships with a score of 160 after after two rounds of stroke play at Carmel Valley Ranch Resort in Carmel.

Kogan fired a first-round total of 81 and shot a nine-over-par 79 in the second round of the tournament, for women 50-and-over. Molly Murphy Crowley of Piedmont leads the tournament with a two-round total of 153.

The final round of play is today.

Wright advances: Chad Wright of Ventura and USC finished with a five-under-par 67 at Industry Hills Golf Club on Tuesday to advance to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open next month.

Jason Semelsberger of Newhall and UCLA finished with a 70 and Brad Gallagher of Valencia had 71 to also qualify for the regional.

On Monday, Brian Hull of La Canada and USC and Pepperdine’s Michael Walton each shot four-under par 68 at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in Ranch Santa Fe to advance.

The sectional qualifying is June 2 at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana. The U.S. Open is June 12-15 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

Ruelas bout: Rafael Ruelas of Sylmar, former International Boxing Federation lightweight champion, will face Chad Broussard in a 10-round junior welterweight fight May 24 in Denver.

Ruelas, 26, 48-3 with 38 knockouts, is ranked No. 4 by the World Boxing Council and has seven consecutive victories since losing his title to Oscar De La Hoya in May 1985. Broussard, 26, is 39-2 with 30 knockouts.

The fight is part of a six-bout card featuring U.S. Olympic gold medalist David Reid against Robert Koon in a six-round junior middleweight fight. The fight is Reid’s second as a professional.

Scoggins debuts: Brothers Bobby and Timothy Scoggins of Dallas, who enjoyed successful careers as amateurs in Texas, will make their professional debuts in separate bouts Thursday night at the Reseda Country Club.

Bobby will face Paul Jones in a four-round cruiserweight bout. Tim will fight James “Baby Tyson” Brock in a four-round light heavyweight bout.

The Scogginses have relocated to Southern California and are expected to fight regularly at the Country Club.

Moving up: Jim Smiley, a former ball boy, player and varsity assistant at Crescenta Valley High, has been named the school’s boys’ basketball coach, replacing John Goffredo, who resigned in February after 19 seasons.

Smiley, a 1985 Crescenta Valley graduate, was a member of the first Goffredo-coached team to win 20 games in a season in 1985. Since 1992, Smiley has served as varsity assistant and junior varsity head coach. Smiley is only the third coach in the program’s 36-year history.

Wheeler hired: Richard Wheeler, an assistant football coach at Valley View High in Moreno Valley last season, has been hired as the head coach at La Canada High.

MacIntosh commits: Alyson MacIntosh of Ventura High, the 1996 Ventura County girls’ cross-country champion, has committed to Southern Mississippi.
