Compton Mayor Charges Police Harassment

Compton Mayor Omar Bradley has complained to a county supervisor that he was pulled over, frisked and sexually harassed by two female Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies Monday afternoon.

An aide to Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke said Bradley called in a rage after he was pulled over about 4 p.m. Monday because the car he was driving--which belonged to his brother--had outstanding warrants. On Tuesday, Bradley said a Sheriff’s Department official had called for an inquiry into the incident.

“I’m confident they’re going to do the right thing,” Bradley said. He declined further comment.

Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Deputy Angie Prewett said she was not aware of any such internal probe. She said two deputies were on routine patrol in an unincorporated county area near Compton when they saw a car and checked the license plate against their computer records.

The owner of the car was wanted on $15,000 in warrants for traffic violations, she said. The deputies pulled the car over and approached Bradley, who produced a temporary driver’s license with no picture identification, she said.

After asking Bradley to get out of the car so they could determine if he was the warrant suspect, the deputies “did a pat-down search they always do to look for weapons,” Prewett said.
