Puente Program

I want to congratulate you for the excellent article April 8 on the Puente high school program at Magnolia High School and Savanna High School in Anaheim. And I want to commend the Anaheim Union High School District for their courage to approve the pilot project and give those Latino and other at-risk students a chance.
Years of research have shown that without good reading and writing skills, students are doomed to failure. For too long we in the educational system have been passing the buck: “It’s the elementary schools’ responsibility to teach good basic writing and reading skills.” Or it’s the junior highs’ or high schools’ responsibility, if we are college instructors.
The Puente program has been proven to be one of the most successful programs in the state, by using successful role models as mentors, a qualified English instructor and a counselor in the classroom. It gives community professionals a chance to be partners in a responsible manner with the educational institution in their community. ENRIQUETA RAMOS
