Laguna Art Museum Requests City Funds

LAGUNA BEACH — The Laguna Art Museum is asking the City Council to put its money where its proclamation is, requesting $122,500 in support following a successful community campaign to keep the museum an independent institution focused on Laguna Beach.
The council recently issued a proclamation lauding the “extraordinary efforts” of that campaign by museum supporters and trustees, who are asking the city for annual support for the next decade, decreasing from $122,500 by 10% each year. The money would fund exhibitions, education and fund-raising efforts, museum spokeswoman Johanna Felder said Tuesday.
City Manager Kenneth C. Frank said a majority of council members have indicated they’d “like to” help financially. “But whether they can do $120,000, I don’t know; whether they can do it for more than one year, I don’t know,” Frank said. In recent years, the city has allocated the museum a “token” $2,000 or so annually, he noted.
No decision on the issue will be made until June 17, when the council adopts its 1997-98 budget, Frank said, although it may be discussed at Tuesday’s budget hearing.
The museum has an annual budget of about $600,000, Felder said.
