Still No Decision on Yankee Protest

League President Gene Budig won’t decide until Thursday at the earliest on the New York Yankees’ protest of last week’s 7-5 loss to Kansas City.

Royal runner Jay Bell was mistakenly called out by third base umpire Dale Ford last Friday night for passing a runner who already had been forced out and technically was no longer a runner. Bell was allowed to return to third base and the Royals went on to score three runs, tying the game.

New York played the game under protest, and Yankee Manager Joe Torre was ejected the following day for continuing to criticize the umpires.

Texas pitcher Roger Pavlik has a bone chip in his right elbow and may have surgery if the injury doesn’t improve with rest and rehabilitation. He was scheduled to start against Boston on Sunday but was scratched because of the injury and placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 7.

The Chicago White Sox say right fielder Lyle Mouton, placed on the 15-day disables list, is expected to be out three to six weeks and could face surgery because of a broken facial bone.

Mouton broke a bone on the right side of his face in a collision with center fielder Dave Martinez in the fifth inning of Chicago’s 8-5 victory Sunday over the Oakland Athletics.
